Football: Guardiola predicts roller-coaster title run-in after Liverpool blip

MANCHESTER, England (REUTERS) - Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola believes critics have been too quick to write off his side's chances of defending the Premier League crown, and he expects more twists and turns in the title race.
Back-to-back draws for Liverpool have handed City an opportunity to move to the top of the league table for the first time since December with a win over Everton on Wednesday.
Guardiola stressed the need for calm during the title run-in, saying the quality of their Premier League opponents means there will be plenty of surprise results between now and the end of the campaign.
"Three or four days ago we were already done, the champions were Liverpool," Guardiola told reporters on Tuesday (Feb 5).
"Now we can be leading.
"We try to be calm. There will be surprises and it will be tough for teams to win every game. Non-contenders have ability to create problems.
"What I'm more concerned about is never to forget who we are as a team, doing what we have to do. That's what I want to watch, and after we see about the results, the table."
City rebounded from a midweek league defeat by Newcastle United to beat Arsenal 3-1 on Sunday.
When asked if the result had lifted the mood in the dressing room, Guardiola said: "I like to see my teams in the past and in the future being not happy when they don't win a game.
"I don't like to see them laugh when they lose. My job is nice when you laugh and have won."
He also said the team have hardly had any time to savour their wins due to the packed match schedule.
"It's been every three days for three months. It's like a machine - go, go, go."

Gunners can only loan, not buy players: Emery

Gunners can only loan, not buy players: Emery
LONDON • Unai Emery has said Arsenal will be able to sign players only on loan this month.
The Arsenal manager, who has no issue with Aaron Ramsey reportedly close to leaving for Juventus on a free transfer at the end of the season, has been linked with moves for Barcelona's Denis Suarez and Sevilla's Ever Banega.
Speaking ahead of today's trip to West Ham, the Spaniard admitted he would have to wheel and deal in the January transfer window as funds were limited.
"We cannot sign permanently," he said. "We can only loan players. I know the club is working on possibilities of which players can help us with big performances like we need now. I cannot say more."
Emery worked with Banega and Suarez at Sevilla and the latter is out of favour at the Nou Camp and would help to solve Arsenal's lack of attacking width.
However, it remains to be seen whether the club can secure a loan for the 25-year-old midfielder, with Barcelona asking for £10 million (S$17.2 million). Sevilla are likely to place an even heftier price on Banega, who has been a key figure for Emery in the past.
"I know this player and he's a very good player," the 47-year-old said.

MAKING ENDS MEET
We are working with the players who are with us now. Also, we are giving chances to the young players and finding with them the regularity to be consistent when we need them to be.
UNAI EMERY, Arsenal manager, is counting on youth to meet fixture demands.

The former Sevilla boss also insisted he was not unhappy with Arsenal's financial restrictions.
He added: "We are working with the players who are with us now. Also, we are giving chances to the young players and finding with them the regularity to be consistent when we need them to be.
"I am very happy. I know it is not easy for us now in this transfer market and, if we can find one player who can help us like we need, with the quality and a different player for getting in our squad, we are going to do it.
"But I am happy with every player today. It is really some injuries that didn't help us in the last matches because we struggled with different injuries with the players... if one or two players can come and help us, that is perfect."
The Gunners' defensive problems have eased for their visit to the London Stadium, with Hector Bellerin, Konstantinos Mavropanos, Shkodran Mustafi and Nacho Monreal all returning to full training earlier this week.
Midfielder Mesut Ozil could also play against Manuel Pellegrini's men, after shaking off the knee injury that has kept him out since Boxing Day.

Football: Sevilla's Caparros suffering from leukemia but vows to continue as coach

SEVILLE, SPAIN (AFP) - Sevilla coach Joaquin Caparros announced on Sunday (April 7) that he has chronic leukemia but says the condition is under control and will not prevent him continuing in his job.
The 63-year-old, who took over last month after Pablo Machin was sacked, was speaking after Sevilla's 2-0 victory over Real Valladolid in La Liga.
"I have chronic leukemia," Caparros said in the post-match press conference. "I have caught it early and can live a normal life.
"I want to enjoy my job and for everyone to stay calm. I've had no treatment and am grateful for the club giving me the opportunity (to continue coaching)." Previously Sevilla's sporting director, Caparros is now acting as coach until the end of the season, with the team winning four of his six games in charge so far.
Another former Sevilla coach, Eduardo Berizzo, announced in November 2017 that he was suffering from prostate cancer. He was sacked a month later following a string of bad results.
The victory over Valladolid moved Sevilla up to fifth in the table after two goals in the final six minutes from Roque Mesa Quevedo and Munir El Haddadi.
They are now only a point behind Getafe, who they play later this month after a crunch derby at home to Real Betis next weekend.
"My goal is the Champions League, that's very clear," Caparros said. "That is our objective and we are going to do everything we can to achieve it."
Getafe kept their own remarkable bid for Champions League qualification on track by edging past Athletic Bilbao 1-0, Angel Rodriguez Diaz on target to seal his side's first win in four games.
Alaves were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Leganes while Huesca scored two of three goals in six second-half minutes away to Levante, but it was only enough for a 2-2 draw.
Despite signs of a revival in recent weeks, Huesca remain six points adrift of safety while Levante sit three clear of 18th-placed Villarreal, who play away to Real Betis later on Sunday.

Football: Thailand axe Serbian coach Milovan Rajevac after Asian Cup horror show in 4-1 loss to India

ABU DHABI (AFP) - Thailand have fired coach Milovan Rajevac following a humiliating 4-1 thrashing by India in their opening Asian Cup football game at the weekend.
The 65-year-old Serb, who took charge of Thailand in 2017, paid the price after the War Elephants conceded three second-half goals to slump to a shock defeat in Abu Dhabi on Sunday (Jan 6).
Thai football chiefs took a dim view of their Group A flop and acted swiftly to remove Rajevac the morning after.
"The result is not what is expected of the Thai national team and that our supporters deserve," Thailand's FA president Somyot Poompanmoung said.
"Like all Thai football fans across the country, I am also disappointed with the result. But as president of the football association, I cannot stand still with this problem."
Former assistant coach Sirisak Yodyardthai will assume control of the team when they face Bahrain on Jan 10 and hosts United Arab Emirates on Jan 14, Thai officials added.
Rajevac, who has had spells in charge of Algeria and Qatar, famously steered Ghana to the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Cup where they were beaten on penalties by Uruguay.
But he was left shell-shocked by Thailand's horror show against underdogs India, whose veteran striker Sunil Chhetri scored twice, overtaking Lionel Messi's 65 international goals in the process.
Lamenting his side's abject display, Rajevac admitted that India were worthy winners.
"They were phenomenal - they ran more, were more aggressive and wanted it more," he said.
"They absolutely deserved to win. But we underperformed, especially in the second half."
Rajevic has been criticised for his defensive style but the Serb clearly felt otherwise after watching Thailand over-run by a hungry India side.
"It's not always about technical ability and skill on the ball," he said. "We lacked power, strength and aggression. We need to put more pressure on the ball and show more passion."
Thailand, appearing for the first time in the Finals since co-hosting the Asian Cup in 2007, have now won just one of 21 games at the continent's showcase competition.
Cricket-mad India find themselves as unlikely leaders of Group A thanks to their first Asian Cup win in 55 years.
The Emiratis were held 1-1 by Bahrain in Saturday's curtain-raiser.

Wounded Spurs out to tackle the Blues

LONDON • Such was Mauricio Pochettino's confidence in Dele Alli adapting to a "false nine" role that Tottenham were not going to reinforce their front line, even after the ankle injury suffered by Harry Kane and Son Heung-min's absence due to the Asian Cup.
However, the Spurs manager's plans not to spend in the January transfer market were thrown into disarray on Tuesday night after scans confirmed his worst fears.
Alli suffered a hamstring injury during last Sunday's 2-1 Premier League win at Fulham and the club revealed he would now undergo rehabilitation and is expected to return to training in early March.
The midfielder, who is set to miss a host of key games including the the Champions League last-16 first leg against Borussia Dortmund and a league match at Chelsea, tweeted he was "gutted" with the diagnosis.
He said: "I will do everything in my power to return as quick as possible. Thank you for the messages."
The 22-year-old's six-week spell on the sidelines comes at the worst time for Spurs, with the club looking to defend their one-goal lead going into today's second leg of their League Cup semi-final with Chelsea.
They will travel to Stamford Bridge without Kane, who is out till March, Son and Alli, and Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson felt now was "a good time" to play Tottenham.
He told Sky: "If you could say before the game that you can pull out three players from that team, then it would be Kane, Alli and Son."
But Eric Dier insisted Spurs could not feel "sorry for ourselves" and it would not be an excuse if Pochettino's men fail in their attempt to lift their first piece of silverware since 2008.
Insisting the team were not "sulking about it", the midfielder said: "Every team gets injuries, we have to deal with it."
There was better news as they bid to reach their first final in four years while exacting a measure of revenge against the team that beat them in the 2015 League Cup final.
Moussa Sissoko and Victor Wanyama have returned to training along with Lucas Moura who, after a three-game absence, is expected to feature in Alli's absence.
There were also reports of unrest in their London rivals' dressing room.
Manager Maurizio Sarri publicly questioned his men's mental strength and revealed it was "extremely difficult" to motivate them in the wake of last Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Arsenal.
While Sky pundit Gary Neville said on his weekend podcast it was now "inevitable that Sarri would get the sack at some point", Marcos Alonso has backed his boss and challenged his teammates to prove they have what it takes to arrest their slide, starting with Spurs.
Amid suggestions that several players are unhappy with his tactics, including playing N'Golo Kante and Eden Hazard out of position while favouring Jorginho, Alonso claimed the Blues manager's criticism was justified.
The Spain defender said: "When you lose, you learn. We have to perform again (against Spurs)."
