Football: Deeney joy as special Watford reach FA Cup final

LONDON (AFP) – Watford captain Troy Deeney hailed his side’s “special” comeback as they reached the FA Cup final for the first time since 1984 with a dramatic 3-2 win over Wolves on Sunday (April 7).
Javi Gracia’s side were 11 minutes from bowing out at the semi-final stage after Wolves raced into a two-goal lead at Wembley.  But substitute Gerard Deulofeu gave Watford a lifeline with a superb strike, setting the stage for Deeney to win a penalty deep into stoppage-time when he was tripped by Leander Dendoncker.
Deeney admitted it was an anxious moment as he waited for VAR to confirm the foul, but he held his nerve to score the most important goal of his life with a fierce blast from the spot.
Deulofeu completed Watford’s stunning revival in extra-time when he calmly slotted in the winner set up a final date with Manchester City on May 18.
“I’m not going to lie, I just hit it as hard as I could. You know if you miss you’re out, so I just had a word with myself and calmed down,” Deeney said.  “I’d been practising them but this emotion you can’t really create on the training pitch so I took myself away and calmed myself down and got myself in that training pitch mode.”
Gracia admitted he was pinching himself when Watford snatched their last-gasp leveller.  “Everything was lost, but we were able to show our character and at this moment I am very proud of my players,” he said.
“We tried until the end and sometimes it happens if you believe.”
Watford will be bidding to win the FA Cup for the first time when they face City, after their only other final appearance ended in defeat against Everton 35 years ago.
That Hornets team, managed by legendary boss Graham Taylor, was the finest in the club’s history.  But Deeney believes the current crop are building something memorable as well.
“I’ve said on many occasions that this team has something special. We’re not the most talented, we’re not all that,” he said.  “The hard work and desire at 2-0 down, many teams would’ve called it a day but we kept fighting and kept going and brought the little man on, who produced a bit of magic.
“We’ve got room to grow, there’s not a ceiling on us yet a team. For a club of this size, let’s enjoy this moment.”
Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo admitted it was devastating to miss out on the club’s first FA Cup final appearance since 1960.
“It was an emotional game. We had it, and it got away from us. It was a sad moment, we cannot hide it. Now it is disappointing and sadness,” he said.

Football: Manchester City beat Cardiff 2-0 to return to Premier League summit

Football: Manchester City beat Cardiff 2-0 to return to Premier League summit

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Pep Guardiola's Manchester City eased to a 2-0 win over Cardiff at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday (April 3) to retake top spot in the Premier League from title rivals Liverpool.
Goals from Kevin De Bruyne and Leroy Sane were enough to lift City back into top spot, at least until Friday, when Jurgen Klopp's team visit Southampton.
City now have a maximum of 13 games remaining in a potentially historic season that could see them add the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League to the League Cup they lifted against Chelsea in February.
But, whatever the remaining two months holds for Guardiola's team, they are back in the driving seat in the Premier League on 80 points, one ahead of Liverpool. Both sides have six league games remaining.
Guardiola, whose side play Brighton in the FA Cup semi-finals on Saturday, was able to make seven changes against Neil Warnock's struggling side, resting key players in the process.
The alterations did not dull City's attacking intent but Gabriel Jesus, chosen with Sergio Aguero having been left out as a precaution, was guilty of a string of first-half misses.
De Bruyne claimed the first goal, after just five minutes, from Aymeric Laporte's through ball, with a strong run and blistering shot from a tight angle that left questions over Neil Etheridge, beaten at his near post.
Sane struck just before half-time, driving a technically brilliant low shot into the far corner after Riyad Mahrez's cross had been cushioned into his path by Jesus.
CITY DOMINATION
But the Brazilian should have done better from any number of first-half chances, one coming after just 34 seconds when he slid in and narrowly missed converting De Bruyne's low cross into an open net.
Mahrez forced Etheridge into a diving, full-stretch save with an early, curling effort, Jesus skied a shot over from 12 yards and the City striker, again, miscued a close-range effort, under pressure from two defenders, after more good play from De Bruyne.
Guardiola's side also launched a breathtaking counter-attack that saw four of their players break against two from Cardiff only for De Bruyne to free Jesus who again wasted a shot that was deflected behind.
The only minor concern for Guardiola, with an eye on the remaining fixtures, was the loss of left-back Oleksandr Zinchenko after just 18 minutes to an apparent hamstring injury, although the introduction of substitute Kyle Walker hardly represented a downgrade.
City goalkeeper Ederson remained completely untroubled as the second half followed the same pattern.
Phil Foden, making his first ever Premier League start a month short of turning 19, saw his shot saved from just six yards out while De Bruyne's long-distance free-kick bounced just wide.
Sean Morrison almost turned a De Bruyne cross into his own goal and, in one intoxicating five-minute spell after the hour, six good City chances came and went, Etheridge saving well from Foden twice, a Laporte header, Mahrez and Sane while Fernandinho struck a post for good measure.
By the time Oumar Niasse steered Cardiff's first on-target shot of the evening directly at Ederson, after 74 minutes, the outcome had long since been decided and his shot even drew ironic cheers from his own supporters.

Football: Cannavaro future in doubt after just 10 days as China coach after two losses to weaker sides

Football: Cannavaro future in doubt after just 10 days as China coach after two losses to weaker sides

SHANGHAI (AFP) - Fabio Cannavaro's short reign as China football coach could already be over after the hosts were beaten for the second time in five days on Monday (March 25) and again failed to score.
The Italian World Cup winner in 2006 was put in charge 10 days ago, but the local media had speculated that the China Cup amounted to an audition to be fellow Italian Marcello Lippi's long-term successor.
If that was the case, the 45-year-old legendary defender fluffed his lines.
The home side followed up last Thursday's 1-0 loss to Thailand with another disjointed display in the four-team tournament, going down 1-0 to lower-ranked Uzbekistan in the third place play-off.
In front of a sparse crowd for the mid-afternoon match in Nanning, China failed to muster a shot on target and there was a smattering of jeers at the final whistle.
Former Juventus and Real Madrid star Cannavaro, who is also coach at Guangzhou Evergrande, said afterwards that he would hold talks with the Chinese Football Association (CFA) and the Chinese Super League (CSL) club.
"But until now the CFA hasn't made any clear statement about the appointment," he said.
"I have said before: taking over the national football team can be a very big challenge. The bigger the challenge, the greater the passion will be.

"As the national team is experiencing changes, we all have some concerns about the pace and degree of the changes.
"If (China) needs me, I will consider it, but who can be the coach of the national team cannot be decided in one day."
Juggling a top CSL job and the national side "is difficult", Cannavaro admitted, after another meek defeat that left China - who have grand ambitions to host a World Cup and become a major footballing force - bottom of the four sides in the China Cup.
"We still need to calm down and discuss it. If we cannot find a suitable way to cooperate, I will still coach Evergrande (only)."
Cannavaro made five changes to the side lucky to lose by just one goal to Thailand, but it only made the team - missing the rested Espanyol forward Wu Lei - less effective.
They were already on the back foot when forward Eldor Shomurodov took advantage of hesitant defending by Evergrande's Zhang Linpeng on 35 minutes to lash the ball into the roof of the net for Uzbekistan, who are 89th in the Fifa rankings to China's 72nd.
Uzbekistan, soundly defeated 3-0 by Uruguay on Friday, were also the better team in the second half and should have extended their lead, but China-based substitute Odil Ahmedov headed straight at goalkeeper Yan Junling.
In the final, stand-in forward Cristhian Stuani scored his third goal in two games as Uruguay taught Thailand a footballing lesson to win the China Cup with a 4-0 victory.
The 2018 World Cup quarter-finalists hardly missed the injured star-striking duo of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani as they made it seven goals in two games.

Football: You can reach 1,000 goals, Pele tells French star Kylian Mbappe

Football: You can reach 1,000 goals, Pele tells French star Kylian Mbappe

PARIS (AFP) - Football legend Pele told Kylian Mbappe on Tuesday (April 2) that he believes the French World Cup winner can emulate his own achievement of scoring 1,000 career goals.
The 78-year-old Brazilian claims to have netted over 1,000 goals in his career, while Mbappe has so far managed 103 in total, with 92 of those coming at the top level.
"It's possible, I scored exactly 1,025, so 1,000 goals is possible for him," Pele told AFP in Paris, where he met Mbappe at a sponsor event for Hublot watches.
Mbappe, who last year became only the second teenager to score in a World Cup final after Pele in France's 4-2 victory over Croatia, played down Pele's comments.
"I think that even if we count the goals on inter-city pitches and goals on the PlayStation, I won't be able to reach the 1,000-goal mark," said the 20-year-old Paris St Germain forward.
"We will try to get as close as we can, but I think I'll be a long way off it at the end of my career."
Mbappe has scored 32 goals in all competitions for PSG this season, including 27 from only 24 Ligue 1 appearances.
Pele was only 21 when he won his second World Cup in 1962, adding a third eight years later.
"There's only one 'King' and he's there," said Mbappe. "I'm just Kylian, I'm trying to do my best to help my team and my national side.
"The comparisons are flattering but I know very well that I will never do what he did."
It was not the first time that Mbappe has had to temper comparisons with Pele, after a rush to crown him a future footballing great during the World Cup in Russia, where he scored four goals in total.
But the former Monaco striker insists that he is not focused on becoming the best player of modern times.
"When Pele was playing, he didn't think he wanted to be the best player in history, he wanted to have fun, help his country and his club, which he did," he said.
"What I want is to help PSG, the France team and afterwards it will be other people who tell you that you are the best.
"Everyone says that he is the best, but if you are (the best), there's no need to say it. It's not a goal for me."
Pele spent the majority of his career at Santos in his home country, bar a spell in the United States with the New York Cosmos shortly before his retirement.
He told Mbappe, who has been repeatedly linked with a move away from PSG, that the key to smashing goalscoring records is playing in the very best teams.
"People tend to say that goals are the most important thing - I thank God for having scored so many in my career - but we must know that we need to be well-supported, you can't score on your own, you need good teammates, that's very important."
Mbappe and his Paris teammates have only the French Cup left to fight for this season, with the Ligue 1 title all but secured and their Champions League campaign over after a humiliating defeat by Manchester United.
