Football: Bologna earn 'miracle' Serie A survival in six-goal Lazio thriller

ROME (AFP) - Bologna coach Sinisa Mihajlovic hailed his team for pulling off a "miracle" to secure their top flight survival with a 3-3 draw at Lazio on Monday (May 20) enough to keep the northerners in Serie A next season.
It was a vital point for Bologna who have been transformed since the arrival of Serbian coach Mihajlovic in place of Filippo Inzaghi, brother of Lazio coach Simone, last February.
"Nobody, or at least very few believed in us staying up a few months ago," said Serb Mihajlovic, a former Yugoslavia international player.
"I was one of the few. The more that time went by, the more convinced I was that we were on the right road but it was still something of a small miracle." The club were 18th with just two wins from 21 games when the former Serbia, AC Milan and Torino coach arrived, but since have won eight matches out of 16 and are now positioned 12th.
"Now, we're aiming to pull off a real masterstroke on Saturday (against Napoli) to finish tenth," he added.
Lazio are already through to next season's Europa League after their Coppa Italia win over Atalanta last Wednesday in Rome, and have nothing left to play for as they sit eighth.
But Simone Inzaghi's side had taken the lead after 13 minutes through Joaquin Correa, who also scored in their Coppa Italia victory in the Stadio Olimpico.
Andrea Poli pulled Bologna level five minutes after the break with Mattia Destro firing in from close range two minutes later.
A Bastos curling got Lazio back in the game five minutes later with Sergej Milinkovic-Savic again proving decisive off the bench as in the Coppa final, grabbing a point with a curling free kick over the wall ten minutes from time.
Bologna are four points ahead of Genoa who occupy the final relegation place with one game left this season.
Chievo and Frosinone are already condemned to Serie B next season with four teams still under threat - Genoa, Empoli, Udinese and Fiorentina.
Lazio are eighth and the best they can finish is seventh, with their final game against Torino.

Football: Man United open talks with Rashford over new deal, reports say

LONDON (AFP) - Manchester United have opened talks with Marcus Rashford over a new and improved contract following the forward's impressive run of form under caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, reports said on Tuesday (Feb 5).
The 21-year-old scored his 10th goal of the season in Sunday's 1-0 win at Leicester, becoming the second-youngest player to reach 100 Premier League appearances for United after Ryan Giggs.
Rashford's contract expires next year and while United have the option to extend it until 2021, negotiations are understood to have started over a fresh agreement.
Rashford has started all eight Premier League games since Solskjaer took over from the sacked Jose Mourinho in December, scoring six goals.
The club are also working on a new contract for goalkeeper David de Gea, having last week tied forward Anthony Martial down until at least 2024.
United interim boss Solskjaer said on Friday that Martial and Rashford could create a devastating on-field relationship for years to come.
"They'll play many, many years together, hopefully, so if they get an understanding of each other, because both are very good at coming in off the left," he said.
"If one of them plays centrally, then the other one has to have opposite movements."
Seven wins in eight league games under Solskjaer have lifted United to just two points behind fourth-placed Chelsea in the race for Champions League places.

Football: Deeney and Deulofeu seal Watford win at West Ham

LONDON (REUTERS) - Watford brought West Ham United's streak of Premier League success to an abrupt halt with a surprise 2-0 win at the London Stadium on Saturday (Dec 22) thanks to a first-half Troy Deeney penalty and a late Gerard Deulofeu clincher.
Deeney tucked home his third goal of the season on the half-hour from the spot after Fabian Balbuena had bundled over Roberto Pereyra, the defender injuring himself so badly that he had to leave the field.
The goal came during end-to-end fare as the Hammers had begun to take control in search of a fifth successive league victory.
Lukasz Fabianski had saved his last three penalties but could do nothing to stop Deeney putting the visitors ahead, although the Polish goalkeeper did make a magnificent stop after the break to deny Abdoulaye Doucoure.
West Ham did most of the pressing, though, with Michail Antonio twice heading against the post after the break and Javier Hernandez squandering excellent chances before Deulofeu sealed victory three minutes from time with a sharp finish.
The Spaniard's goal secured Watford their first away win for over two months and lifted them, temporarily at least, into the top six, three points clear of the Hammers.
Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster again needed to be in fine form to thwart the home side.
"We deserved a little bit more, I think, at least to draw the game," said West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini.
"Going a goal behind made it more difficult in that we were playing under pressure. We had three or four clear chances to at least draw the game.
"The penalty gave Watford that impetus. Before the goal we had three very dangerous opportunities and dominated. Once they scored, they were calm while we were more nervous."
Watford manager Javi Gracia was not about to get too giddy about his side's elevated position in the table.
"We have a lot of games so we don't have time to speak about our position. We are improving. We started playing well with four wins, after that we have competed well with good and bad results," said the Spaniard.
"At the end of the game today, we got the result we deserved. It was an open game but we deserved the victory."
Foster, inevitably, came in for special praise. "The keeper always has a good performance and he gives confidence to the rest of the team," said Garcia.

Maurizio Sarri came to Chelsea in the summer with the weight of expectation on his shoulder. City will pounce if Liverpool slip up: Guardiola

LONDON • Pep Guardiola said that he has no "magician's ball" to tell him how many points his Manchester City side may need to retain their Premier League title, following Monday's 3-0 win over Wolves that cut leaders Liverpool's lead to four points.
The Spaniard, however, also warned that his men are ready to pounce if the Reds, on 57 points after 22 games, falter. City took last season's title with a record 100 points.
After two goals from Gabriel Jesus and a Conor Coady own goal at the Etihad, Guardiola was quizzed on the number of points needed to become champions this year.
"I don't have a magician's ball to discover how many. I said to them (the players) don't look at the schedule, don't look at the calendar for the Liverpool games," he said.
"Forget about it, normally when this happens in my experience you then lose your own games. And then it's over. All we can do is win our games and be there and maybe one day they fail; but if we don't win, they will be champions.
"The best way is to look at the next game - Huddersfield. If Liverpool win the title, then I am sure I will congratulate Jurgen (Klopp) because it will be well deserved."
Two first-half goals from Jesus showed City had banished their shaky December form, when they lost three league games to Chelsea, Crystal Palace and Leicester.
Monday's victory was their third straight in the league and fifth in a row in all competitions since the loss to the Foxes on Boxing Day.

  • 12 Goals Gabriel Jesus has scored in his last eight appearances for Manchester City in all competitions at the Etihad Stadium.

Two weeks into 2019, they have scored a remarkable 21 goals in four home games and 99 in all competitions already this campaign.
Jesus had scored just three times in his 16 league games coming into the new year but his two-goal showing continued his rich vein of form. He scored once in the seven-goal FA Cup third-round win over Rotherham and hit four in last week's 9-0 League Cup semi-final first-leg humiliation of Burton, and now has seven goals in his past three outings.
City's task was made easier when Willy Boly made a rash challenge after 19 minutes. The French defender's out-of control, one-footed lunge at Bernardo Silva may not have been malicious but was deserving of a straight red.
"It was quite a bad tackle but I'm fine," said Silva. "Yes, he did apologise at the end of the game. These things happen."
Nuno Espirito Santo also had no complaints about the straight red.
"It's very close to me and I think it's a clear red card," the Wolves manager said.
"Playing with 11 is tough, but playing with 10 is even harder. It was a tough night. Since we conceded the first goal, it became very difficult.
"There's no doubt about the result, they controlled the game and had the chances."

EPL Title hopes far from over: Guardiola

EPL Title hopes far from over: Guardiola

LONDON • Pep Guardiola's 100th Premier League game had looked to be a mere formality after Sergio Aguero's opener against Newcastle after only 24 seconds - the quickest Premier League goal this season.
However, his players failed to build on their lightning start as Manchester City slumped to a shock 2-1 loss at St James' Park on Tuesday to put their title defence in jeopardy.
Although Guardiola, who is now facing the hardest challenge of his stewardship, insisted post-game the title race was not over as "there are still many games and anything can happen", there seemed to be a hint of resignation with leaders Liverpool in the box seat.
He said: "We had a chance today to reduce the lead. Tomorrow is a game for our opponents. When you are behind, you have to win games and we couldn't do that."
Denying that the English champions had underestimated Newcastle, he added: "We'd never do that and that's the reason why we're still in four competitions. That's why we recorded 100 points last season.
"It's just sometimes, we don't play at the level we want to play and that can happen, that's something I understand completely."
But after admitting "it was not our best night" with their flat and careless display on Tyneside, talk of an unprecedented quadruple will be on the back-burner for now .
The Spaniard said: "I know the challenge is big, being in all competitions is what it is. If you want to go up as a club, you have to accept that challenge. I prefer to be in that position."

THERE IS STILL TIME
A lead of seven points is a lot but we're not in April or May. There are a lot of tough games to play against sides trying to stay in this division, or playing to get into the Europa League or the Champions League.
PEP GUARDIOLA, Man City manager, keeping his chin up despite expecting Liverpool to beat Leicester last night.

It must have come as a real surprise to him after a sluggish City conceded for the first time since Roberto Firmino netted on Jan 3. It was a series of 30 unanswered strikes before Salomon Rondon's and Matt Ritchie's spot kick on Tuesday.
Guardiola added: "We didn't make a good performance. We didn't take the rhythm of the game, it was slow and we weren't aggressive enough.
"The game was not good. We did not defend the second ball well, we have to improve."
Conceding "next week will be tough" - City have to play Arsenal, Everton and Chelsea in seven days - he challenged his side to rise to the occasion as there were "a lot of titles and points to play for".
The 48-year-old also attempted to put a spin on the upset and their tricky run of upcoming fixtures as they "were still in January", and so, there could be plenty more twists and turns in Liverpool's bid to end a 29-year wait to win the league.
He said: "There's a lot of time but of course, when you're behind the leaders, you don't want to drop points and every game is one less.
"A lead of seven points is a lot but we're not in April or May. There are a lot of tough games to play against sides trying to stay in this division, or playing to get into the Europa League or the Champions League.
"In our case, we will do our best to be there and not to give up."
With City's unremitting pressing and cutting interplay curiously absent against Rafa Benitez's men, it meant he also missed out on an outright record of achieving most wins in the league era by any manager in their first 100 games.
Instead, he will now share that landmark with his old rival and former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho, who won 73 of his first 100 games with Chelsea.

Football: Sterling double helps Man City beat Palace and top Premier League table, Jesus nets third goal

(REUTERS) - Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling struck twice as the English Premier League champions beat Crystal Palace 3-1 at Selhurst Park on Sunday (April 14) to go top of the table and heap pressure on title rivals Liverpool.
Victory left City on 83 points from 33 matches, one point above Liverpool although the Merseyside club can leapfrog Pep Guardiola's team with a win over third-placed Chelsea later on Sunday.
Having missed an easy chance early on, Sterling put City ahead in the 15th minute when he ran on to Kevin de Bruyne's inch-perfect pass from behind the halfway line and fired past goalkeeper Vicente Guaita.
The England international added a second for his 17th league goal of the season after the break, meeting Leroy Sane's first-time cross into the box with a calm left-footed finish that wrong-footed Guaita as it rolled in.
Palace ensured an entertaining finish to the contest when Luka Milivojevic scored from a free kick with nine minutes to go, after midfielder James McArthur was brought down on the edge of the penalty area.
City, however, sealed the deal with their third goal of the match, as de Bruyne latched on to a poor pass from Palace defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka before feeding substitute Gabriel Jesus, who finished emphatically.
Palace are at Arsenal next on Saturday, while City host Tottenham Hotspur.
