Football: Neymar heads to Qatar for medical assessment

PARIS (AFP) - Neymar will travel to Qatar to undergo a "complete assessment" six weeks into his recovery from a fractured right foot, the club said on Thursday (March 8).
The Brazil forward watched on forlornly from the stands at the Parc des Princes as PSG crashed out of the Champions League last 16 on Wednesday to Manchester United on away goals following a 3-1 defeat.
"Neymar Jr will travel to Aspetar (sports clinic) in Qatar for the next 3 days as scheduled in the initial recovery plan," the club wrote on its Twitter account.
"He will undertake a complete assessment after six weeks of his injury. He will be accompanied by a medical team from PSG."
The 27-year-old damaged the fifth metatarsal in his right foot in a French Cup win over Strasbourg on January 23 and was ruled out for 10 weeks.
PSG were hoping he would be healed enough to get back on the pitch in time for a potential Champions League quarter-final in April, but the French side suffered a humiliating exit as United sensationally overturned a 2-0 first-leg deficit.

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford celebrating scoring the opening goal, while Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster vents his frustration in United's 2-1 Premier League win yesterday - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first since being appointed as permanent manager. A glorious pass from his own half by United defender Luke Shaw after Troy Deeney lost possession carved open Watford's defence in the 28th minute and found Rashford, who timed his run to perfection before producing the coolest of finishes. United doubled their lead against the run of play in the 72nd minute when Jesse Lingard found Anthony Martial, whose effort cannoned off Foster. But the Frenchman picked up the pieces to scoop into an empty net. Abdoulaye Doucoure scored a consolation goal for Watford in the 90th minute. With the win, United leapfrogged Arsenal into fourth place on 61 points.

Champs may need 105 pts: Klopp

Champs may need 105 pts: Klopp

LONDON • Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has warned his players that they may need as many as 105 points to beat Manchester City to the English Premier League title this season.
City won the title last campaign with a record 100 points, but such has been the pace at the top this term that the German believes even more might be needed this time.
Speaking after the Reds beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 on Friday to ensure they will spend Christmas Day on top of the table, he said: "Everybody asks me about the situation, first in the table and all that stuff and that the last four times a team was first in the table at Christmas they won the league.
"So far it looks like a really special season, 48 points before Christmas is crazy.
"But there are other teams. Chelsea, Manchester City, Tottenham, Arsenal, they will probably win (this weekend), then they will have 40-something points, nobody is dropping points...
"You will probably need 105 to be champions, you don't know. We cannot start a party."
City remained on 44 points after being shocked 3-2 at home by Crystal Palace yesterday.

Jurgen Klopp has now defeated all 32 British clubs he has faced as Liverpool manager in all competitions. Before Friday, Wolves were the only side he failed to beat, losing in the FA Cup in January last year in their only previous meeting.

Mohamed Salah's 11th Premier League goal of the season and Virgil van Dijk's first for the club since he scored on his debut against Everton helped to secure a seventh successive league victory.
Liverpool have now played 18 matches and remain the only unbeaten side in the league.
To get to 105 points, they can afford to lose only one of their remaining 20 games and they must also clinch 19 victories.
Klopp was particularly pleased with the professional way in which his team overcame a Wolves side that have a good record (W1 D3 L2) against top-six opponents this season.
"It was very mature," he said. "The heavy rain made things very hard.
"Both goals had nothing to do with the things we did in the game but we were quick in the mind in two set pieces."
Salah's opening goal was brilliantly converted with the outside of his left boot and he also set up the second for van Dijk, who was outstanding at the back for Liverpool.
"He is in a good moment and very important for us and hopefully it can stay like this," said Klopp, when asked about van Dijk's form and influence on the team.
"The work rate in general is outstanding with how we defended. I love the boy but the two in front (Jordan Henderson and Fabinho) have to run a lot more to make it easier for the centre-halves and they did it again."
With van Dijk anchoring the rock-solid defence, Liverpool have conceded only seven times in the league this season - the fewest of all teams.
"I'm more happy that I'm keeping clean sheets with my team and winning games," the Dutchman said on the club website.
"Obviously scoring a goal is a bonus and obviously a very proud moment and hopefully there's more to come, but I'm more focused on winning games."

VAR drama mars Juve's historic win

TURIN • Juventus set a new points record in Serie A on Saturday with 53 from 19 games, but the seven-time defending Italian champions signed off for the winter break with the controversy surrounding the role of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) ringing in their ears.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Juventus, undefeated in the league this season, closed out the year with a 2-1 win over Sampdoria to go nine clear of second-placed Napoli.
But VAR played a key role at the Allianz Stadium as two debatable penalties were awarded - one for Massimiliano Allegri's men and one for Sampdoria - while the opposition also had an added-time equaliser controversially ruled out by the technology.
Ronaldo curled in the opener after just two minutes in Turin, adding a second from the spot on 65 minutes to go top of the league's scoring charts on 14 goals and Allegri was delighted with the hard-fought victory.
The Bianconeri have dropped points just twice, against Genoa in October and Atalanta in midweek, and are firmly on track for an eighth consecutive Scudetto.
The Juventus coach told reporters: "It was important to end the year on a high and it wasn't at all easy.
"Records are meaningless, if not to improve and raise the bar. We do have the perception that with Ronaldo, there's a better chance of winning the Champions League. However, we're not even in January yet and there's a long way to go."
However, his counterpart Marco Giampaolo slammed Ronaldo's penalty as "a gift", before adding that (Riccardo) Saponara's goal should never have been cancelled".
He blasted: "For me, morally, the game was 2-2."
According to the BBC, the VAR was right to award Sampdoria's penalty as well as rule out Saponara's strike for offside, but Ronaldo's spot-kick should not have been given as Alex Ferrari's handball was not deliberate.

Football: Pele to have urinary tract surgery in Brazil, says hospital

SAO PAULO (AFP) - Pele will have an operation to remove a "ureteral stone,"  his doctors said on Wednesday (April 10), a day after the football great returned to Brazil following treatment in a Paris hospital for an infection.
The 78-year-old was admitted to the Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo for more tests after arriving in Brazil early on Tuesday.
“The tests show the presence of stones in the left ureter and their removal is scheduled during the current hospital stay, but still without a defined date,” the hospital said in a statement.
“The patient is in a stable condition and good general state from a clinical point of view.”
Pele, who is widely considered to be the greatest footballer in history, was discharged late on Monday from the private American hospital in the Paris suburbs where he had been taken after falling ill following an appearance at a promotional event with France striker Kylian Mbappe.
In a statement on Monday on the Globoesporte.com site, Pele said he had required “medical assistance and surgery” for a “severe urinary infection.”
Pele, who won the World Cup with Brazil in 1958, 1962 and perhaps most memorably in Mexico in 1970 when his swashbuckling team re-defined modern football, has had several health scares in recent years.
On Wednesday, legendary Argentinian footballer Diego Maradona wished Pele well on Instagram, posting a picture of the two football greats in 1979.
"This picture is 40 years old today. It was taken in Rio de Janeiro, when we met each other in person. How young we were... I wish you a very speedy recovery, King @Pele," said the Argentine great, currently the coach of Mexican second-division club Dorados.
The picture shows an 18-year-old Maradona, his face aglow, watching Pele, then 38, play the guitar.

The two players are often cited as rivals for the title of greatest footballer of all time, fuelling the larger and never-ending rivalry between Brazil and Argentina.
Pele, the only footballer to win three World Cups (1958, 1962 and 1970), has suffered from increasingly fragile health in recent years.
In 2014, he was hospitalised in intensive care for another urinary tract infection, for which he had to undergo dialysis.

Football: Guardiola expects Man City to suffer in tricky FA Cup trip to Newport

MANCHESTER, England (REUTERS) - Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola predicts his side will "suffer" against fourth-tier Newport County in their FA Cup fifth round match on Saturday but has urged his players to adapt to a battered playing surface at Rodney Parade.
Michael Flynn's Newport, who are 15th in the League Two standings, have grabbed the headlines with their giant-killing run in the FA Cup, which includes wins over Leicester City and Middlesbrough.
"We are going to suffer because they are taller and stronger than us. In some areas they will be better than us," Guardiola told a news conference on Friday (Feb 15).
"We prepare with a lot of respect they have done incredible in the competition, beating Leicester and Boro. What they do, they do really well.
"They are ready, it's not the first time they've played away in a cup competition in a lower division. We will take this very seriously, I am sure about that."
City's multi-million pound squad, used to the pristine surfaces of their own Etihad Stadium and other Premier League venues, are set for a unique challenge at Rodney Parade, a ground which Newport share with two Welsh rugby union clubs.
Guardiola accepts it will be difficult to execute their typical pass-and-move football but said his title-winning squad is capable of finding solutions.
"I have seen vintage games here in the 1970s and 1980s and all the pitches were bad. Now, most of the pitches are perfect," he said.
"That's the big difference in England now, you can play in different ways, before it wasn't possible.
"Now the pitch you will see tomorrow (how it is) and we have to adapt, we have to play longer or quicker, we have to see. You don't win anything complaining. They are the owners and we have to adapt."

It was October 2015, it was Jurgen Klopp's first game as Liverpool manager and it was a 0-0 draw with Mauricio Pochettino's evolving Tottenham. Then, they were 10th and seventh respectively in the Premier League. Almost four years later, they meet again as Europe's top two, the Champions League finalists. If both have progressed, they have done so with shared philosophies and on similar routes to Madrid.

Football: Experienced Liverpool making a big statement, says Klopp

PORTO (REUTERS) - Liverpool face a testing Champions League semi-final against Barcelona, but have made a statement by reaching the last four for the second straight year and are equipped to deal with the very best, manager Juergen Klopp said.
Liverpool beat Porto 4-1 at the Dragao Stadium on Wednesday (April 17) to advance 6-1 on aggregate with their attacking trio of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino all on target once again.
With their defence marshalled by the hugely impressive Virgil Van Dijk, Liverpool, who reached the final last year, are now undefeated in their last 17 games in all competitions as they seek a Premier League-Champions League double.
"We have been together for a while, we needed to be more mature," Klopp said.
"The boys made their own experience in this competition, especially last year. It's the second time in a row we are in the semis.
"That says something, it's a big statement for the club. OK we play Barca, maybe it's not too easy," the German added with a smile.
Liverpool certainly made it look easy in the second half against Porto after a tough opening 25 minutes.

Yet after Sadio Mane latched onto a Mohamed Salah ball to open the scoring following a VAR review, Liverpool were in charge and never lost their composure.
"I was thinking it's offside, to be honest. And I told the boys 'keep going, keep going' and they say 'no, you have to wait because it's a goal'," the Senegalese said.
"I was surprised. It was an important goal but the main point today was to qualify for the semis."
Klopp said they were expecting the early Porto onslaught.
"It was very, very difficult. We knew that before, that it will be a proper whirlwind here and that's what they did," Klopp said.
"We know these games in the Champions league, they (Porto) are a completely different animal in home games. And it was clear that we had to be ready for that," he added.
"In a deep defending situation we were ready for that, we couldn't put proper pressure on them in their build-up. A little bit disorganisation, but it's all good.
"A difficult game but we won it and so I am completely fine. Going to the semi-finals, I think we are the only ones who were last in the semi-finals and again in the semi-final so that's really special for us."

Football: 'Adulting' Ikhsan finds his footing in Norway

Football: 'Adulting' Ikhsan finds his footing in Norway

SINGAPORE - He may still be some way off his ultimate ambition of playing in a top European league, but Singapore striker Ikhsan Fandi is definitely making progress in the right direction, after scoring his first two goals in Norway's second division for Raufoss IL on May 12 and 16.
And the 20-year-old told The Straits Times he is not just growing in confidence on the pitch, he is also learning life lessons off it.
He said: "In Norway, I'm really adulting! When my brother (Irfan Fandi) and I lived and trained in Chile in 2014 and 2015, there were people taking care of me.
"But now, I'm learning to be independent and I think I'm doing well. The only thing I still don't like to do is laundry and I'm lazy to iron stuff. But overall, it is definitely a good life experience for me."
Home in Raufoss - an 80-minute drive from Norway's capital Oslo - is one of four two-bedroom apartments in a house. Ikhsan shares his apartment with another youngster, 20-year-old defender Parfait Bizoza.
"It's five minutes from our home ground, cosy and just nice for both of us," said Ikhsan. "We get along well. Parfait used to be the only one cooking and I would do more of the cleaning, but now I have learnt to cook simple dishes so I help out too.
"I brought an air fryer, which we don't use much of now, and a rice cooker to Norway. We usually eat rice, salmon with some sauce, or chicken pasta, and Parfait makes lasagne and tacos sometimes."

While he is starting to catch the eye with some sharp finishes - his first was a dramatic bicycle-kick winner in the 3-2 away victory over Skeid, and his second was a towering header in the 5-2 home defeat by Sandnes Ulf - Ikhsan picked functional over flashy for his ride, with the Volkswagen Golf.
He said: "There is not much to do in Raufoss itself as it is a small municipal centre. There is a bowling centre and cinema 10 minutes away in the larger town Gjovik, but I usually stay home to watch drama series like Game of Thrones or play video games.
"Sometimes, we would drive about five minutes to my teammates Oskar Loken and Thierry Dabove's place to play Fortnite."
With many of the 7,000 Raufoss inhabitants now familiar with Ikhsan's name - the 2,500-capacity Nammo Stadion is almost full for home games - it seems like the Raufoss No. 18 has taken to Norwegian football like fish to water, or like a salmon surging upstream.
The environment certainly helps. With little distraction in Raufoss, Ikhsan is able to focus on becoming better.
Typically, his team play one league match a week, usually on a Sunday. The next day is spent on recovery, and the following day is the only day off. They will then spend the four days before the match training and preparing for the game. These sessions are under two hours and once a week, they have double sessions. In addition to the Nammo Stadion, which is laid with a top-grade artificial pitch, Raufoss also has an indoor arena for training during winter.
Ikhsan said: "Once the season starts, we also go to the gym on our own. After each training session, I will stay behind and do extra shooting and heading. I always want to improve my finishing and composure.
"Raufoss are a young team in which everyone wants to improve and everyone is pushing each other to become better."
Since arriving in Raufoss for trials and signing a two-year deal in January, Ikhsan has done well to chalk off quite a few milestones, including making seven league appearances - all off the bench - amid wintry conditions to make an impression.
There are more on his to-do list, such as earning his first league start, scoring 10 goals to help his team stay in the Obos-ligaen, and attracting the attention of bigger clubs.
Ikhsan said: "The Obos-ligaen is a high-intensity and very physical league with many skilful players. I still play as a striker in the team, so I don't think I have changed my style too much. I just have to work harder to win the duels and get to the ball first. It's little things like these that sometimes prove to be the difference.
"The main differences between the football here and in Singapore are the quality and intensity. The players here are stronger, and most of them have good technique and first touch.
"But some things don't change. As a striker, scoring goals is the most important thing. I also try to help my team by holding the ball well, providing link-up play, and making good movements to create space for my team.
"Of course, I was anxious and eager to prove myself as quickly as I can, and I'm happy and relieved to have scored my first goals for the club. I will continue to work hard to become the best footballer I can be and hopefully go on to have a fruitful career for club and country."
